Lobby Digital Signage

The digital signage greets visitors near the lobby entrances to Door County’s administrative building, its library, and its police station and jail. Visix HDs media players feed Sharp Aquos Board interactive displays. The 40-inch screens, configured in portrait mode on Chief mounts, provide interactive wayfinding functionality as well as displaying welcome messaging and location-specific information such as hours of operation, public notices and event listings. Door County’s digital signage also uses Visix software’s dynamic data widgets to pull in third-party content such as directory listings, meeting agendas and event calendars.

“The Visix signage solution helps them quickly figure out where they need to be if, for example, they’re coming in to get a permit, submit paperwork, or meet with county staff,” Gary Huebner, CTS, AV and security senior account manager, Camera Corner Connecting Point, said in the release. “It provides wayfinding not only within the facility, but also essential information about the county overall. And if they’re meeting with someone, it gives them something interesting to engage with while they wait.”

Supplied with Door County’s logos and graphics, Visix designed custom content templates for a consistent visual experience across all three sites and to reinforce the county’s branding.

“Visix’s rock-solid digital signage platform and the artistry of their creative designers bring a unified experience to those visiting these different facilities, with branding that is more cohesive,” Huebner said in the release. “I encourage other counties and municipalities to do the same. It provides a much more streamlined experience for the people these agencies are serving.”

Large High Tech Signage Sale

Visual Art, a digital signage producer, and Finnish retail company Kesko, have signed a long-term agreement on a software solution that will be used to create and publish content for about 15,000 digital screens in K Group’s grocery stores, according to a company press release.

Part of the solution is Visual Arts’ digital signage software, CMS Signage Player.

Kesko’s goal was to find a common system and the possibility of centralized control of all its digital screens in its 1,500-plus stores around Finland.

“With our own CMS at the bottom, Kesko now has the opportunity to easily control and adapt the content from a central location, but can of course still create localized content for individual stores and screens,” Pontus Meijer, CRO at Visual Art, said in the release. “This type of digital communication solution suits us perfectly and Kesko is through its size and type of stores, obviously an extra feather in the cap to have as clients.”

The agreement covers planning, rollout and ongoing support. Visual Art helps Kesko evaluate systems and solutions before roll-out and also is responsible for installation and ongoing maintenance. The CMS is a large part of the digital communication solution, according to the release.

“We were looking for a simple, intuitive and user-friendly digital signage software to have full control of our digital fleet. In addition, it is important that the solution integrates with all our other types of systems, something that Visual Art has managed to solve for us,” Pekka Valkearanta, business CIO, Kesko Grocery Trade, said in the release.

Kesko and K-retailers together form K Group. K Group is the third biggest retail operator in Northern Europe and it employs about 39,000 people. Kesko has around 1,800 stores throughout Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Visual Art, founded in 1997, is based in Stockholm.

Exterity installs IPTV Closed Network Security Systems at Large Washington State Hospitals

Exterity installs IPTV system at large Washington state hospitalProvided

Dec. 14, 2021

Overlake Medical Center, a 350-bed, non-profit regional hospital in Bellevue, Washington, has installed an Exterity IPTV system to improve the patient experience and manage the hospital’s in-house video requirements, according to a company press release.

The system is part of Project FutureCare, an upgrade and refurbishment project at the healthcare facility. The budget for the five-year project is set at $250 million.

FutureCare features a 240,000 square-foot tower which opened in February 2021. This facility has a concourse-style drop-off and wayfinding, while also offering larger, single-patient rooms.

“We evaluated our legacy video system — largely coaxial-based cable TV — and realized it didn’t support the in-room entertainment experience we wanted to offer our patients,” Jeni Connelly, IT senior project manager at Overlake, said in the release. “The New East Tower project gave us a chance to change that for the better. We decided to opt for a state-of-the-art IPTV system as we felt it would be the ideal solution to address our ‘patient experience’ quandary, as well as service the full array of our day-to-day video needs.”

The IPTV system needed to consolidate 350 patient rooms — as well as common areas and a videowall in the entrance lobby — onto a single network, which is centrally managed and supervised. The hospital also hoped to upgrade the existing cable TV system to include video-on-demand (VoD) services.

Neurilink, based in Boise, Idaho, was chosen as the AV systems integrator for the project and started work in March 2020. The company worked with Exterity to design the IPTV system.

Each of the patient rooms contains a hospital-grade display and the menu is navigated with the ‘nurse call’ pillow-speaker remote.

“This was our first experience of working with Exterity and I can’t speak highly enough of the team there,” Laura Moorhead, senior account executive at Neurilink, said in the release.

QR Code Usage Integration with Signage and Retail Electronic Systems

Customer use of QR codes has increased during the pandemic as retailers moved to offer shoppers touch-free interactive experiences in store.

That’s a prime finding of a OnQ survey, QR Code Consumer Use Study, which explores how shopper behavior around QR codes has evolved since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release.

Survey respondents indicated a 110% increase in QR code usage on a daily or weekly basis compared to 2019, more than doubling since the start of the pandemic.

The primary reasons customers choose to scan QR codes are to take advantage of a discount or other special offer (65%), and get additional product information (61%).

“Make no mistake, the pandemic was hugely disruptive to the retail industry. But we’re now starting to see that many changes to the in-store shopping experience borne out of necessity during the pandemic’s darkest days are having a lasting, positive effect,” OnQ CEO Paul Chapuis said in the release. “The increased use of QR codes at retail is a great example of a pandemic-driven change that’s here to stay. Brands and retailers are seizing the opportunity to deepen customer engagement now that shoppers are much more comfortable interacting with QR codes.”

The pandemic dealt a temporary blow to touch interactivity as customers became more reluctant to engage with high-touch surfaces, such as interactive displays. QR codes filled the gap, enabling retailers to offer touch-free interactive experiences customers control with their phones.

This third-party study csurveyed customers throughout the U.S. who own a smartphone, are familiar with QR codes, and regularly shop at a variety of retail establishments, including multi-department retailers, club stores, consumer electronics stores, department stores, malls, drug stores, hardware stores and specialty retailers. Of the more than 400 respondents, 51% identified as female and 49% identified as male. The majority of respondents (35%) were 18-29 years old, while 32% were 45-60, 19% were over 60, and 14% were 30-44 years old.

OnQ designs, engineers and manufactures retail displays. The company is headquartered in Hayward, California with production facilities in Akron, Ohio. The company was founded in 2004 and incorporated in 2007.

BrightSign, FWI upgrade Ferguson’s digital signage network

BrightSign, FWI upgrade Ferguson's digital signage networkProvided

Dec. 15, 2021

BrightSign and Four Winds Interactive, producers of digital signage content, have partnered to update the 1,000 endpoint digital signage network for Ferguson, a wholesale supplier of commercial and residential plumbing supplies, according to a company press release.

The company has a diverse distribution network that includes HVAC, waterworks and industrial, as well as showrooms for its residential products. With 1,400 locations, 10 distribution centers, and 27,000 associates, Ferguson also has a need for a streamlined, enterprise-wide communications network.

Ferguson also wanted to switch to a more reliable, cost-effective player platform. In addition, Ferguson needed a platform with scheduling functionality, capable of accommodating employee-focused content or customer-focused content on the same screens, depending on the time of day. Ferguson sought a platform that would allow them to professionally sell ad space to their vendor partners, ensuring Ferguson’s customers have access to information while creating a new revenue stream to offset the costs of the network.

The company also replaced all of its existing content players. Ferguson had the opportunity to leverage BrightSign players with the FWI Cloud. By enabling location-specific content contribution while still maintaining control of global messaging, the company ensures each location can update its screens with a list of scheduled appointments, special events and more.

After switching to BrightSign players, Ferguson saved more than $300,000 and improved uptime by 25%, according to the release.

BrightSign LLC, is headquartered in Los Gatos, California, with offices in Europe and Asia. FWI was founded in 2005 and is based in Denver.

Education Market- Signage Report Impact of COVID-19 on the global Market

Harris, OAAA poll: Younger audiences embrace OOH adsPhoto: iStock

Nov. 22, 2021

Out of Home advertising, in combination with social media, is a powerful vehicle for reaching younger generations, according to a consumer survey conducted by the Out of Home Advertising Association and The Harris Poll.

More than two-thirds (67%) of Gen Z and Millennial consumers recalled seeing OOH advertising on social media, and a majority — 91% of Gen Zers and 82% of Millennials — say they would reshare OOH ads on social media. The Harris Poll conducted the online survey from Oct. 20 – 25, 2021, with a representative sample of 1,000 U.S. adults over 18 years old. Data is weighted to reflect the U.S. general public across age, gender, race/ethnicity, region, income, household size and employment.

These are key findings from “OOH Media Opportunities: Consumer Insights and Intent – Early 2022,” a research report from OAAA. Almost three-fifths of U.S. consumers have engaged with OOH ads, including 85% of Gen Zers and 78% of Millennials. This includes downloading an app (46% for Gen Z) to making an ecommerce purchase (27% for Millennials).

U.S. consumers, particularly on the younger end of the spectrum, said in the survey they are very concerned about their privacy and the use of personal information online. Most Gen Zers (72%) and Millennials (77%) are worried that their data is being used to target them with ads across the internet.

Nearly half of those surveyed say that contextual OOH ads — those that include timely information, such as a product relevant to the current weather or breakfast offerings in the morning — are more interesting to them than typical advertising.

“This should be a wake up call to all digital marketers: although Americans, particularly young Americans, are wary of targeted online advertising, they have a growing appetite for advertising that speaks to their need state,” Anna Bager, president and CEO, OAAA, said in the release. “It’s heartening that the growth of programmatic digital out of home will enable marketers to tap into a younger, tech-savvy demographic of consumer.”

A majority (82%) of both Gen Zers and Millennials said they are open to seeing some type of ad within VR or AR, and 72% of U.S. adults in larger urban centers with a population over 1 million, echoed those sentiments.

“The fact that the majority of consumers have engaged with an out of home ad is proof positive that consumers embrace OOH advertising that is of interest, targeted and relevant to their lives,” John Gerzema, CEO, The Harris Poll, said in the release. “But the fact that the majority of young consumers have shared an OOH ad on social media should be a revelation for marketers. When was the last time you shared an online ad?”

Founded in 1891, OAAA is headquartered in Washington, D.C. with offices in New York City. The Harris Poll has tracked public opinion, motivations and social sentiment since 1963 and is part of Harris Insights & Analytics, a consulting and market research firm.
